"Proud to be Bahamian," A Painting by Alton R. Lowe & My Last Christmas Photo at Home

The painting you see of a Junkanoo boy hung for many years in the entrance hall of my home on Green Turtle Cay. Its many colors were always commented on by my guests. I have painted a number of boys and girls in Junkanoo costumes over the years. They are all different, but speak of Christmas and New Year’s and bring the Holiday Season to life through the brilliant colors of the costumes.

Since I was a boy, anything to do with the Holidays gets my full attention. Each year my father and I would go to Abaco to cut down one of the Abaco pines for our Christmas tree. We ordered decorations from Sears. In later years, when I had my own tree, I started collecting decorations to hang on it.

You can see the hundreds of those decorations, many gifts from friends, hanging on my eleven-foot tree in my home on Green Turtle Cay. The photo shows the tree and the dining room decorated for Christmas dinner. It was my last Christmas, because all you see in the photo was destroyed the next year by Hurricane Dorian.

Sad for the loss, yes, but I have many years of beautiful memories of the wonderful holidays shared with friends and family. We can make memories which last a lifetime if we will just take the time and make the effort. Despite my loss, Christmas Holidays will always remain a high point of my year, and I hope the same holds for you who are reading this. MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR. May the blessings of the Season embrace you and your family. - Alton
