"Iva B," A Painting by Alton R. Lowe

This is the oldest of the boat models in the Albert Lowe Museum on Green Turtle Cay. The hull was carved by Albert Lowe in 1938 from a log of Spanish cedar that washed up on the shore of the island. The masts, booms, and rudder are made of fir, and the decking is white pine and red cedar.

The model was on exhibition in Nassau when the Queen and Prince Philip made an official visit. The Prince remarked on the beauty of the carving, according to people at the exhibition.

The "Iva B" is modeled along the lines of the fifty-foot "Roberts and Russel," built at Hope Town, which disappeared while on a voyage bringing lumber from Cuba. No trace of the vessel or crew was ever found.

In this painting, you see Albert Lowe, my father, refurbishing the model around 1965 before it was sent to Nassau for the exhibition. Today it stands proudly in the museum among a number of other boat models carved by my father. - Alton

All of our prints are on fine art paper. Prints will ship rolled in a cardboard tube or flat with firm insert.
